Amber opened the door to find three police officers—two in uniform and one in plain clothes, holding out his badge for her examination. During her marriage, she’d grown accustomed to seeing the men in blue on her doorstep inquiring about Derek’s latest wrongdoing. But now that she’d been divorced for five years, she hadn’t a clue as to what they’d want, other than to track down her wayward ex.

“Mrs. Norris?” the tall, plain-clothed officer asked, his voice deep and serious.

“Ms. Norris now. I’m divorced. What do you need, officer?”

“I’m Detective Maguire. Officers Stevens and Heaton. May we come in?” he asked, shoving his credentials into the back pocket of his jeans.

A sigh escaped her lips. “Sure, if you must.” She stepped aside and allowed them entry. “Let me guess. My ex-husband has gone and committed another crime and you think he’s here. Well, feel free to search the place because he’s not.” She crossed her arms and resisted the urge to scream.

“Here’s a search warrant, ma’am,” Detective Maguire said, handing her a folded piece of paper much like the ones she’d seen before. She accepted the paper without looking at it.

Detective Maguire motioned for the other two men to begin their search. They moved around the apartment cautiously, hands on their guns. Thank God Jenna was at a play date.

Amber returned her attention to the detective when he started to speak again. “When did you last see your ex-husband, ma’am?” The man was tall, about six-feet-two, lean and toned. Not a bad package if he weren’t looking at her as if she was lower than something on the bottom of his shoe.
